How can you prevent type 2 diabetes? Diabetes is a chronic (long-term) disease. When you have diabetes, there’s too much glucose (sugar) in your blood. There’s more than one type of diabetes, but type 2 diabetes is the most common.
You are more likely to get type 2 diabetes if you are overweight and inactive, or if you have prediabetes. People with prediabetes have more glucose in their blood than normal, but not enough to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes can cause disability and death – but the good news is that you can do a lot to delay or prevent type 2 diabetes, including:
- Watching your weight
- Eating healthy
- Staying active
